A cluster of beading workshops guides you through the basics to more advanced options for flat peyote stitch and wire-working. The instructor is Mia Vollkommer who has taught beading classes for The Smithsonian Associates for eight years and manages her own jewelry business. No supplies are provided.



Pearl Knotting

Spend your evening learning the basics of pearl knotting - the precision placement of silk knots between freshwater pearls.  Students will begin a necklace in class and be shown finishing techniques, design ideas, and how to avoid common knotting mistakes. 
Introduction to Beading

This three-night beading workshop teaches the basics of bead stringing, wirework, and pearl knotting. Students are taught the names and uses for common hand tools, wire, stringing materials, and findings. They make up to two necklaces, three or four pairs of earrings, and one single-strand necklace or bracelet using the pearl knotting technique. This workshop is perfect for the new beader or a student who wants a refresher on the essential techniques of making beaded jewelry.
Wire Wrapped Gem Stone Rings

Wire + Stone + Wrapping = gorgeous one-of-a-kind ring.
In this workshop, students learn how to create a properly sized ring out of two materials and using just a few tools. Once you’ve made one, you won’t believe you haven’t been wrapping rings all along!
The Flat Peyote Stitch Bracelet

Get a taste for the endless possibilities of peyote stitch while creating a fun and easy bracelet. Students learn flat peyote stitch, graph reading, edge finishing, and how to complete a piece with a beaded clasp. This project is perfect for those new to peyote and bead weavers of any skill level who want to reconnect with this amazingly versatile stitch.
Beading Basics

This weekend workshop provides students with a double shot of beading basics.  Participants learn the fundamentals of both bead stringing and beginning wire work, and about the different materials and design tips necessary to begin to make stunning jewelry for themselves and friends alike.
Pendant Necklaces with Stones and Bales
Mon., November 8, 2010 at 6:15 p.m.
Students learn how to design with stone pendants that have tricky hole placement such as doughnuts and top-drilled and front-to-back-drilled pieces. With just wire and a few tools and beads, several stunning pendants may be finished during the class period.
Stylish Sustainability – Recycled Bottle Cap
Tue., November 9, 2010 at 6:15 p.m.
In this workshop, students learn how to use recycled materials and resin to create stylish pendants for necklaces or earring designs. No prior beading experience is necessary, and resin is provided.
