If you want to attend an opera production but worry you won’t understand anything, musicologist Patrick O’Donnell can help. This evening, he explores the ingredients of a good opera: passion, humor, villainy, love, and, of course, costumes. Using excerpts from popular operas in local production this season, O’Donnell explains what to listen for and why. He also talks about the history of this art form and the basic terminology needed to understand the music.

O’Donnell teaches operatic voice at Catholic University and the Levine School.
