The American strategic
bombing campaigns
against Germany and
Japan between 1942 and
1945 were some of the
most destructive and consequential
undertakings in
the history of warfare. The
campaigns consumed an
enormous share of
American economic and
military resources, and represented a watershed in the devastating
methods and effects of modern industrial warfare.
Marcus Jones, professor of history at the U.S. Naval Academy,
addresses several key questions: How effective were the
strategic bombing campaigns? What role did they play in the
defeat and surrender of Germany and Japan? What was the
legacy of our experience with strategic airpower in World War
II for subsequent generations?
