Renowned astrophysicists John Mather, Vera
Rubin, Charles Bennett, and Adam Riess join
moderator Marcia Bartusiak in a lively discussion
about our knowledge of the universe,
from the first moments of the Big Bang to the
mysteries of dark energy.
They note that since the time of Edwin
Hubble in 1925, scientists have established
that our universe is a thousand
trillion times larger than previously
believed, with myriad galaxies like our
own. They discuss current research as
well as what is on the horizon.
Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize
in Physics (with George Smoot) in
2006, is a senior astrophysicist at
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center;
Rubin is a senior fellow in the department
of terrestrial magnetism at the Carnegie
Institution of Washington; Bennett is a
professor of physics and astronomy at Johns
Hopkins University; and Riess is a professor of
physics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins
University and senior member of the science
staff at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
Bartusiak is a visiting professor at MIT and
the author of several books. The Day We
Found the Universe (Pantheon) is
available for signing after the program.
