The slave Spartacus led a fabled rebellion in ancient Italy that
began at a gladiatorial school, grew to include an army of more
than 60,000 that controlled
southern Italy,
and ended in the death
of this former Roman
soldier and the crucifixion
of some 6,000 of
his men.
Historian
Barry
Strauss creates an authoritative
account of
the Spartacus rebellion,
using recent archaeological discoveries, ancient documents,
and his own on-site investigations. Though ultimately defeated
by Roman military leader Pompey, Spartacus became an inspiration
to many writers, as well as a folk hero.
Strauss, author of The Trojan War and
The Battle of Salamis, is a professor of
history and classics at Cornell University.
The Spartacus War (Simon & Schuster) is
available for signing after the program.
