First practiced in Greco-Roman times, encaustic continues its
popularity with modern masters such as Jasper Johns because
of its flexibility and fluidity.
The encaustic method of painting
combines the luminescence of
watercolor, the rich color and
thickness of oils, and the quickdrying
benefits of acrylic. The
medium can be molded, sculpted,
combined with collage materials,
and reworked at any time.
In this workshop ideal for both
beginners and artists wishing to
explore a new medium, students learn to capture vibrant
pigments using heated beeswax and are introduced to safe
methods of working, archival materials, and both historical
and contemporary approaches to the medium.
Some shared supplies are provided and a list of materials to
be brought to the first class is mailed.
Instructor Sandra Warren Gobar is a professional artist and
instructor at the Corcoran School of Art + Design. She is represented
by the Longview Gallery in Virginia.
