The work of Paul Cezanne and the enormous impact it had on the course of 20th-century art, and on American artists in particular, are the subjects of the exhibition Cezanne and American Modernism at the Baltimore Museum of Art through May 23.
The show features 16 paintings and watercolors by Cezanne along with some 80 works by more than 30 American artists—including Max Weber, Man Ray, and Maurice Prendergast—who were directly influenced by Cezanne’s themes, process, and style. Also included are related books, portfolios, and exhibition catalogues.
Our guided tour takes in not only this visiting exhibition but also the BMA’s extraordinary Cone Collection, which features masterpieces by Matisse, Cezanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. Lunch is at Gertrude’s restaurant in the museum.
Art critic and lecturer Judy Pomeranz leads the tour.
