Ruth Reichl, editor of the comprehensive Gourmet Today Cookbook and the last editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine, has served up one of her tastiest dishes: an intimate and inspiring memoir titled For You, Mom, Finally. In an interview with Joe Yonan, Washington Post food and travel editor, Reichl traces a life filled with good food and inspiring chefs on her journey from restaurant critic and food editor for the New York Times to the top ranks of the culinary world. Hers was a career that combined an adventurous spirit with careful attention to detail. Reichl seasons the book with a clear-eyed look at her determination to seek a career in the food industry, despite—or so she thought—her mother, who was not known for culinary creations or, for that matter, following recipes. It wasn’t until years later that Reichl came to realize the sacrifices her mother had made in order to make sure that her daughter’s life would be open to choices.
